Relief Efforts Underway for
North and South Carolina Areas Ravaged By Hurricane

In the past week Hurricane Florence roared through North and South Carolina, leaving damage and need in its wake. As of this writing, over a half a million are still without power, over 10,000 are still in shelters, 16 rivers are still at flood stage, at least a quarter of the crops in the states have been damaged and normal day to day activities for hundreds of thousands of citizens has been interrupted.

Region 8 is proud to call North and South Carolina part of our own and is concerned about the communities and citizens affected by this natural disaster. In response to this tragedy the leadership of Region 8 is asking its members to come to the aide of our brothers and sisters in the Carolina’s in their hour of need.

“We are asking local unions to assist in relief efforts by holding gate collections, local treasury donations and state CAP donations to help these areas devastated by this event,” states UAW Region 8 Director Mitchell Smith. “The region will collect these funds and distribute them to the areas ravaged by these storms. Our great leader Walter Reuther said “there is no greater calling that to serve your fellow man. There is no great contribution than to help the weak. There is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well”. Together we can make a difference and I encourage every UAW Region 8 member to join in this effort to help those in need. Those of us who were fortunate to avoid this disaster should now assist those in need.”

All members can make donations, at your local union. Please make checks payable to UAW Region 8 with the memo to “North and South Carolina Disaster Relief”. Donations will be collected until October 12, 2018.

Donations can be made directly to the Region 8 office. All checks should be made out to UAW Region 8. Please include “North and South Carolina Disaster Relief” on the memo. Checks can be mailed to:
